So I can run an extension lead and get a few more hours of sunlight on the solar panels through the winter
Protip: do NOT get the MC4s with the “protective” plastic flap over the clips. It seems like even when you cut that flap off, getting those to open up again is damn near impossible. I’ve had to tear several of them apart to get the clips to let go.
Those ones don’t look too bad. It can also help to put some shrinkwrap over the nut, those gaskets in there don’t keep out water very well. There shrinkwrap you get that has an adhesive in it that flows out the ends when you heat it, and that really seals it up well.
I added 10 Amp fuses in my solar runs for additional safety. You can just buy MC4 fuses that connect between the male and female MC4 connection. They’re probably not necessary but I’d rather the fuses fail if something goes wrong instead of destroying my charge controller or burning my van to the ground.
So, you’re moving the panels around? Are they sitting on the ground in a frame?
Living in a tiny home, yep, on the ground on a frame
Well, that’s certainly more practical than the roof.
I’ve placed my fair share of solar panels, but did not know this was a standard for the connectors.
The guy at Jaycar reckons he’s never seen anything other than MC4 and it was difficult to find anything different online
