Got hit with this ice storm, too. Kiddo had a two hour delay and remote school, but I still couldn’t sleep in because I had a meeting at 8.

That’s ice damming. Basically it can be prevented with proper ventilation of roof cladding/shingle nail board. Normally eaves, baffles, and turtle/ridge vents will be enough to prevent icicles more than. 6 in long.
Yup it certainly is. It was removed to prevent water buildup on the roof that would cause leaks.
In the spring I’ll address the root cause.
