I realise this could have its problems with abusive mods (although Lemmy records when people edit posts), but to me, it has a lot of benefits. Some communities have rules around how posts should look for clarity and/or aesthetic purposes. Sometimes as a mod I see posts that I think are fine, but could just be slightly adjusted to look a bit different or match up with the standards of the community - and I don’t want to be anal and remove it over something small like that - but I would quietly edit it.

I’ve actually previously asked users to edit their posts in the communities that I mod and it’s working pretty well.
To me, asking people to do something first makes more sense as most users are reasonable considerate people.
Plus it just seems like the more polite method of doing things as an adminWell for me, its contextual. I mod [email protected] currently. If you read the sidebar, and just observe how I post - that’s basically the formatting I’d like. Other people on there aren’t always following it. Now, I don’t really think its a huge problem currently - I’m glad other people are using it. I’m trying to grow it - but some of the ‘errors’ are really minor in regards to the post formatting.
In other cases, it’s just cleaning things up for aesthetic purposes. Fixing typos etc. Small things like that, you know?
Be aware that the more strict your rules are, the lesser people will want to post.

“Please edit your post title to [whatever it should be edited to to reflect community standards]” in the comments from a mod would also resolve the problems you have. In my opinion looking anal about rule enforcement > potential for abuse.
Although I do think if flairs are implemented, mods changing flair would probably be a good option—far less room to change what the original poster is saying to make them look bad.
I mean, and/or the use of bots to automatically instantly remove posts that don’t meet the posting format.

Tildes does this with the rationale being that once a post is submitted to a community it belongs to that community. This solves more things than it breaks since you don’t want to participate in a community where mods would abuse this and modlogs are public anyway.
Yeah, I mean if mod edits are public then I don’t know how this could be abused meaningfully without completely discrediting your community.

I think if the edit log showing the moderator that edited it, and timestamped was publicly visible then any attempts at vandalism or trolling would obviously backfire.
And “by quietly” I simple mean adjusting it. I have no issue with that edit going on the public record in those circumstances. Just I would do it without necessarily bothering the OP. Or maybe it could ping them too automatically. I don’t mind.
