    I think most of the people in Pompeii never saw lava. They were buried deep in charcoal-hot ash from a pyroclastic flow moving at over 100km/h.

    A tidal wave of white hot charcoal burying everything in the city. Death would have been very rapid as their bodies rapidly underwent pyrolysis, turning them into carbon in the absence of oxygen.
