  • KS Robinson addresses this in the Mars trilogy. With adequate aging suppression and some post-scarcity on a thinly populated planet, a movement of hardcore primitivism emerges, tempered by brushing up against the modern. For some, it’s still an instinct.

Even Alexander commented that if he wasn’t in his social position he might live like Diogenes, naked and wild. It’s an old conundrum, a million years of wild vs. 80,000 or so of settled.

  • Region is Canada. TV is connected to an AppleTV and a media server. Forced to use mostly apple stuff for various reasons.

    Free and generally ad-free Apps:

    • CBC Gem (free tier but login)
    • DW (news/docs)
    • France 24
    • Al Jazeera
    • Kanopy (via library card, all good movies)
    • NFB for the best shorts
    • Knowledge Network (free in BC)
    • Local news channel apps

For self hosted media files I access a SMB share with the Infuse app for a full video player experience. It’s the only subscription I pay for an app, worth it.

Left Netflix last year. Left Prime this year. It’s all shit sandwiches over there.

  • I got some training in this. I once had a task of waking everyone up at a forest temple by ringing a giant bell with a hammer over about 3 minutes, at 4:30 AM. Around 400 people relied on that bell to keep things going. But my alarm clock died at three days into a three week session. It was a no-speech retreat so I just dealt with it.

I didn’t miss a bell but the first couple of nights were iffy. Now I will sleep in unless something urgent is going to happen.

  • I repair Macs. Just use basic lithium battery practices:

    • mostly keep charge between 30-80%
    • charge fully if you are about to use
    • long term storage with a 70% charge
    • don’t run down to empty if you can help it
    • don’t leave plugged in all the time
    • avoid prolonged temperature extremes
    • avoid shitty chargers, Apple chargers are expensive but generally worth it

Beware of add-ons that access hardware, for various reasons.

Apple batteries are rated for around 1000 cycles, or around 5 years of average use. Follow the above advice and you might eke out 1500 or so.
