Back before AMD bought ATI (and during the transition) nvidia was actually much better than ATI. For my previous desktop I specifically bought an nvidia card for the better Linux support.
I also wasn’t so worried about my laptop having an nvidia GPU either. And then it kept crashing after being suspended to RAM. Stopped after switching to the integrated Intel graphics. Sadly nVidia doesn’t care about old or laptop graphics.
Yeah, nvidia started open sourcing their kernel interface. But it only works with new GPUs and not the millions of 1080s people still have. Plus the license of nvidia’s closed source drivers (which are still needed) forbid them from being included in an OS image.
Small projects like Bazzite might get away with including them anyways but I bet Valve will have to make a deal with nvidia.
edit: With nvidia releasing their cloud gaming client on SteamOS I just now realised that that is probably a direct result of this kind of discussions.
Are there handhelds with nvidia GPUs? That might be the big distinction.

There were attempts to mirror comments as well but that was awful. It looked like there was a lot of Lemmy activity but it couldn’t mirror people’s answers back so you were just shouting into a void. And it drowned out all the real discussions because of course the Reddit stuff had a lot more activity.

Funny thing is that KDE actually takes up remarkably little resources. You don’t have to install all the apps that come with it and the memory footprint is surprisingly small.
I use Easy Effects to normalise volume so that I don’t have to adjust the volume so often when watching YouTube videos and stuff. Just google for a preset.
Only downside is you’ll have to make exceptions for real time communication apps like Discord because they crackle. But everything else is perfect without any noticeable lag.
There’s a reason why I post under my real name and never delete anything. Because your scenario has a high probability of really happening one way or another. That way I’m more conscious of the stuff I post.
A woman I know had an anonymous blog where she posted stuff about her kids without mentioning any names or showing any photos in an effort to protect them. My wife, who only knows her from her un-anonymised blog found that other blog and recognised her really quickly.

Ugh, there are talks of reintroducing mandatory military service in Germany because of Russia (and a little bit for social services as one can do them as an alternative). Although I see that it might be necessary I hope that my kids won’t have to serve.
