  • I awaken naturally at 4am with or without an alarm. But it has always been this way for me. I was raised on a farm so early rising was always sort of the expectation but it definitely suits my natural rhythms. I do come from a long line of dairy farmers, so there’s probably some selection going on there.

Now for context, I have placed a high priority on sleep hygiene for a very long time. So I usually get 8.5-9 hours of sleep a night. That’s just what experience tells me I need for optimal functioning.

It is a strange life choice. I am not really into nightlife, so I am aware there is an alternate universe of night owls out there, but those worlds rarely collide with mine. I’m ready for a afternoon nap about the time many people start to think about brunch.

  • I’m not the original poster, but their perspective resonates with mine quite well.

We are biological beings of great fragility and complexity. I subscribe to some ‘spiritual’ ideas, but that stops when we get to the persistence of consciousness after death.

Absurdism simply recognizes our biology. Laughter releases feel-good chemicals. It is our refuge from the inexorable grind of raw-dogging reality.

If I had to choose a religion, it would be Bokononism.

“Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly; Man got to sit and wonder ‘why, why, why?’ Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land; Man got to tell himself he understand.”

The only scripture I can acknowledge

  • 50 isn’t old, if you take care of your health and are lucky enough to not have a degenerative disease. So just stop that nonsense line of thought. You will barely be a typical retirement age when the child reaches majority.

I am sorry to hear of the tragedy that opened up this new chapter for you. Yet, it is a new dawn, a new day! You have miles left on your journey.

  • Nice response. It is so strange the conventional ‘wisdom’ around bamboo. And it’s usually people with no actual experience with the plant.

I mean, you clearly mentioned they are in containers (which incidentally may be the reason the culms aren’t expanding fully, few bamboos do well in containers and balcony conditions can be very harsh). I swear people think that it will crawl out and take over your town overnight.

  • Bamboo isn’t a magic plant. It requires specific combinations of conditions to grow: the right soils, the right level of water and sunlight, temperatures within their preferred range.

Yes it’s a pain to eradicate when improperly planted and then ignored for long enough. But it’s just a plant that has specific needs like all plants do.

Limiting factors are the reason. If you put a person in a hole and gave them everything they needed to live, except water, they wouldn’t survive long, as an example.
