I live in the EU, and I actually think there is a website where I can file complaints about such cases, but I don’t know if there is any hope and how it works.

Definitely, your colleague had it worse than me :D. I know it’s irrelevant to them, and it is to me too, but it’s just an abuse of power because I believe I’m not the only one, and who knows how much money they make through fraud.
