Huh? It wouldn’t require a username/password at all (at least in the HTML form sense) so there’s a much lesser chance of chaos happening.

Why not? Maybe because I’m in the Apple walled garden I’ve been spoiled, but it’s literally just scan face/finger (depending on device) and go on. It’s dead simple, and if websites would stop prompting for a username/password beforehand that would be even better.

This is very related to the SNAT option for subnet routers on Tailscale. Though it’s enabled by default, I ran into issues with some services when I’d left it turned off by accident at one point.

In theory the “clean” way to do is to not use SNAT but then the network router needs to do some extra work to bridge the gap in the connection. Personally I was a dealing with a strict service on a device that wouldn’t accept regular non-SNAT traffic (the service was smart enough to say “no, I’m only running on 192.x.x.x and refuse to send traffic to Tailscale”).

Part of the problem isn’t necessarily you or her, I feel like websites are increasingly hostile toward password managers by coming up with arbitrary rules, weird JavaScript hacks and annoying two page sign-in forms.

I’m a web developer but even I get frustrated with how websites want to hijack input fields and do validation with shithole JavaScript frameworks instead of simpler HTML5 validation (only for frontend obviously, the server should still validate on the backend).

Same here. I left my small town at 18 for the next town over, a few years later moved across the country. I have no idea what’s happened with anyone in my class since we left high school.

As a vegan following this story I couldn’t be more delighted.

I’ve had them for a few years as well because their coverage is rock solid.

However their backend is a serious wreck. I had an Apple Watch for about a year but it never worked due to janky NumberSync. I went through it over and over with customer service but the watch never had cellular service longer than a few hours; never had crazy problems like this on other networks.

I found out recently that for about the past six months all incoming calls went to voicemail with no indication whatsoever the calls were coming through (no ring, no missed call notification).

And at one point I had to completely pay off a device just to port a number in to replace the existing number. Apparently their database is so fucked that they use the number as the database primary key.

On AT&T, you have to put in work to keep your devices on network.

When I was a kid we had a Compaq Presario 9500 that came preinstalled with voicemail software that supported having multiple voicemail boxes with speech recognition (c. 1995).

I really thought that was going to be the future and wanted my parents to use it so bad at the time. 😅
