I feel like it’s a pointless waste of time for me idk…
Does it actually help you learn and is it worth it? Or should you just skip it for that day and wait till you don’t feel like death
Feels like even worse than a waste of time to me, like an actual negative where your half formed memories interfere with actual recall.
Especially if you’re cramming the night before. A good sleep will always get you a better result, and if you’re desperate because you’re completely unprepared the lesson to learn is don’t do that again.
For me, any kind of cramming gave me short term gains, but I didn’t remember long term.
That said, past the point of exhaustion, I was too tired for the test the next day anyway.
The best thing to do is cram the same day as the test, up until the very minute the test starts.
But if you do this, you won’t remember the material after the test ends. If you want to actually learn it, you have to take care of your body and mind first.
Sleep makes you learn.
Everything before a sleep is just what you’re loading in for that sleep session basically.
Reading 4 hours and sleeping 4 is 10x better than reading 8 and sleeping zero.
Or reading 2 hours and sleeping 6 instead of reading 6 and sleeping 2. (The former being the better choice.)
Generally no, but I’ve found one exception: the feeling of overcoming a difficult problem at 4am will give you a sound and satisfying sleep like no other in existence.
Then you wake up and forget how you solved it. Time to begin again!
You write code, I can tell.
If you’re tired to the point that you can’t retain any new information, it’s better to take a break and try later when you’re rested.
If I’m really determined to be productive I’ll do simple tasks that don’t require thinking, like making flashcards to use for later or writing out loose ideas and paragraphs that I’ll edit another time.
It will make you angry and frustrated, if that’s what you’re looking for. Probably doesn’t help with learning at all, quite the contrary. If you’re interested and engaged with the material, you can learn so much faster. If you hate what you’re doing, there will be very little progress, if any. Take a nap, and look at the material with fresh eyes when you feel better.
There can also be something I call “mental inertia”. Occasionally, it’s difficult to get started. That’s when a short warmup can help. Start with something easy, to get in the right mood. After that, you can tackle some of the harder problems.
Damn. See the thing is I’ve been sleep deprived for a few days now. I feel like at this rate if I don’t study I’ll never achieve my goals. Idk
You need a strategy to reach your goals, and it should include getting enough sleep. Neglecting it will not help with your goals, unless one of them is to be as miserable as possible.
I didn’t neglect it. I have no choice.
If you’ve truly got no choice in how you manage your time, what does it matter if you should study when sleep deprived? Just sit back and let life make your decisions for you.
Or, work on your time management and work/ life balance so you aren’t forced to do things when exhausted.
Why do people online constantly assume random shit that isn’t true and they have no evidence of
What forced you to have a bad sleep schedule?
Neighbours waking me up in the middle of the night every day
No.
Your brain has to process stuff. And it is at it’s best when you are sleeping. Having your kids sleep in is beneficial for developing their brains.
Society might think you are lazy, but instead your brain is processing new thoughts and information.
Getting exhausted is not ok for a normal sleep pattern. Don’t overdo it.
My neighbours wake me up that’s why
Eye mask, white noise machine or app on your phone to help drown out noise, and if that’s not enough then ear plugs.
I do all of that tho
Then you need better ear plugs. Not whatever headphones you use to jam out (although there are decent noise blocking in ear ones if you look hard enough) but actual hearing protection. Maybe look into ones for gun range use? If you can bear sleeping in them, there’s also the kind of earmuff hearing protection gear that workers use when working on the airport tarmac.
Or louder white noise. The whole point is so that you have audio that you can sleep through (and won’t damage your hearing) that makes outside noise quiet enough that it doesn’t wake you up.
Like seriously what the fuck are your neighbors doing that gets through a good eye mask and ear plugs? Coming inside your room and shaking you?
At some point I would think it would be enough you could lodge a noise complaint with your landlord, RA (if you’re in dorms), or the local police (using the non emergency number).
There’s also melatonin and stuff like zzzquil, but those don’t work for everyone and I would be concerned about anything more than melatonin being potentially habit forming.
I’ve tried various kinds, but the ones that work best hurt too much and I literally cannot wear them. I am a side sleeper, but i don’t even think it would work when lying on the back, unless it’s without a pillow maybe?
Idk I already sleep in the kitchen/living room, I turn the kitchen exhaust on and put the tv on too. I guess I could put the TV louder but I think then it’s too distracting for me.
wtf are your neighbours doing
-
Their kids literally scream at the top of their lungs throughout the night
-
They slam their doors really loudly to where the whole apartment shakes
-
they drop heavy stuff on the ground
-
On top of it all they also wake up around 7am and then scream across the apartment to each other for at least an hour, ensuring I’m not able to sleep in
-
Apartments here generally have poor noise insulation, I’ve lived in several and even in the better ones I still get woken up
I am in Europe though, where do you live that it’s hard for apartment neighbours to wake you lol
Edit: the police here don’t even track don’t people who steal wallets, break in, and assault others if it’s caught on camera… so that’s not an option lol. There is a property manager who is also completely useless. I tried bringing a more minor concern up to him and he basically told me to go fuck myself.
You’d need someone versed in your local laws to go over what options you may have that way. They might have told you off because your problem was too small?
But what I can think of is to move out.
Find a more agreeable apartment. Or, find places in your daily routine where you can get a good nap without getting in trouble or endangering yourself.
Nah it was a legal advice group for my country, and everyone there viciously attacked me saying those people did nothing wrong and that I’m completely insane for not wanting people to sit on my car etc.
I think they all just felt personally attacked cause they do the same thing cause that’s my only explanation.
Everyone here is a scammer. There’s like no way to find a knowledgeable lawyer. Even Google reviews suck and aren’t reliable.
Do you mean like find somewhere else to nap?
On the earplugs front, custom molded earplugs cost a lot, but are amazing for blocking out noise without hurting.
I’ve heard some people say they’re really painful so idk :/

it would give you a sense of pride and accomplishmenttm
good luck with the memory retention though
You’ll have to put two hours into learning things that would take you one while awake.
Hopefully you’ve not procrastinated until this is your only option
You’ll know your body best, but it does take quite some effort to take in and process information.
On very tired days I typically only review my notes (to keep up the SRS) and/or do some admin. Also I try to make sure it’s not only studies having to compromise when my energy is flagging.
There is definitely a point where it’s beneficial to have a rest and continue learning and/or write the exam the next day in a well-rested state.
The problem is I don’t know when I’ll be able to have a rest
